GULF COAST MONARCHS: I am reporting that in the 3 years that I have been actively butterfly gardening, it has been my experience, that monarchs remain in our area and continue to reproduce year round. I have monarch butterflies, caterpillars and chrysalides in my yard at this time. We do not tend to have long periods of cold that kill off all of the vegetation. I grow A. Curassavica and it seems to grow very well here at all times of the year. I do not see butterflies on cold or overcast days. But, on a day like today, I will see monarchs, gulf fritillaries (which also continue to reproduce and populate the area) and sulphurs. The monarchs have been seen roosting in the bushes, trees and overhangs. Once again, I do not believe that, in general, we have temps that would kill the butterflies caterpillars and chrysalids. I have even retrieved leaves that died from light freezing temps, with eggs still attached to them. The caterpillars have emerged as usual. Do to the colder wea
