Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/09/2000

Number: 1

Overwintering monarchs in numbers along the Texas coast. We tagged 41 different wild monarchs in the backyard between Christmas and January 27. Front came thru January 27 and it was cold, cloudy, and wet for most of the next 8 days. Today, Feb 9, we found nine 5th instars on notched leaves on one bed of A. curassavica ... no freeze yet. We found all sizes of larvae and 30 eggs (checked about 1/3 of the A.c. we have) ... two male monarchs patrolling. Reports this week of very few monarchs from Austin to Houston to Galveston and down the coast to Corpus Christi. Found the first larvae of 2000 at school this morning.
