Leaf-Out (Any Species)

Date: 02/14/2000

Number: 1

A common shade tree in the area, Arizona Ash, is leafing out. These trees have turned decidedly green this week with six to eight green leaves. Our neighbor's cottonwood trees have large buds and will be leafing out this week. Shrubs such as redtips, hibscus, and hummingbird bushes have new leaves. Our tropical milkweed, Asclepias curassavica, has never stopped blooming and has six inches of new growth at the bottoms. Victoria had two light freezes, but it has not been below 34 dF at home along the bay. Just as last winter when it was so mild, everyone fears a late March freeze ... something about "thunder in January".
