Maple Syrup (FIRST Sap Run)

Date: 02/15/2000

Number: 1

Our two fifth grade classes (Mr. Mathason & Mr. Hardenberg) tapped 4 maple trees located in the back of our school today, February 15, 2000. Mr. Salge our eighth grade science teacher gave a mini workshop last week on maple sugaring; something he and his family have been doing at their home for several years.
He also led the discussion and actual tapping of the trees. We have had a colder winter this year than during past years. This week the nights have been below freezing and the days above freezing. As we drilled the holes into the trees, the sap was already running. We are hoping to collect and boil down enough so that everyone in each class will be able to have a taste.
