Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 02/14/2000

Number: 1

Altus and I found the first native, wild milkweed of the spring sprouting along the side of US87 about 5 miles east of Victoria. The sprouts were 8 cm to 10 cm tall with about a dozen small leaves. The plants are out in the middle of a coastal bermuda hay patch. We gathered wild milkweed from this patch to feed some of our Monarch larvae last fall. This roadside patch and several others along 12 miles of US87 will be gone in a few weeks due to the widening of US87 from Victoria to Port Lavaca. The variety of milkweed is probably Asclepias viridis, but we will need to see the blooms to be sure.
