My husband and I took a Sunday drive over to Red Wing, Minnesota to check on the wintering eagles at Colville Park. We decided to check further south to see whether the Mississippi River had begun to thaw. Imagine our surprise when we stopped at a boat landing at Frontenac and saw more than 15 eagle on the ice and in the air. We drove along the river south of Lake City and must have spotted approximately 200 eagle on the ice and soaring in the air. The eagles are definitely beginning to migrate north. This seems early as the river is still quite frozen, although in places, like where the Chippewa River flows into it, the river is completely open.
