Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 02/23/2000

Number: 1

I received a report from a New Orleans home owner who has had monarchs overwintering and reproducing in his back yard garden since November 1999. He's had adults and larvae continuously since November, with new adults and larvae present now. Last year he planted nectar plants and milkweed obtained from local nursery (I assume A. curassavica) and the butteflies have remained in his garden all winter, and apparently remained reproductively active. South Louisiana has had a very mild winter for 1999/2000, with only one or two nights with temps below freezing.
