This past weekend (Feb 26 & 27) we netted, tagged, and released 10 "coastal" monarchs that visited the backyard ... moderate fade and some tatter, 2.5 to 3 on two (on a scale of 0 = new to 5 = ghostly and almost transparent), others approx .5 to 2. We have noticed a few monarchs starting to move northeastward along this part of the coast ... faded. We have discovered scattered wild milkweed (Asclepias viridis) blooming from 5 to 18 miles east of Victoria and 10 northeast of Port Lavaca. We checked about 60 stems of A.v. this weekend and found one egg and one leaf with a milk mustache ... some unidentified larva had a snack.
