Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/09/2000

Number: 1

We left school at 4 yesterday and as we were just pulling away from the stop sign an orange and black butterfly approached the van to within eight feet at eye level. Altus and I shouted simultaneously "Monarch! ... Faded!". This is the first monarch of the spring that we would truly call faded! We saw another monarch about a mile farther ... just before leaving the city limits. Both were moving from the SSE to the NNW. light SE wind ... high of 90 dF ... mostly clear The wild milkweed that we have been observing east of Victoria since Valentine's Day is "putting on" seed pods ... found as many as two eggs to a plant.
