We saw what might be our first humming bird of the new year (not one that overwintered along the Texas coast) ... nectaring on the salvia in the backyard at 4:30 pm. Ruby-throated and Black-chinned humming birds have beeen reported in a few locations in Texas the past 48 hours ... right on schedule for the first to attempt the trip according to observers that have kept records for many years. We heard the first male Painted Bunting singing from down the street at 5 pm ... male
Red-winged Blackbirds with bright chevrons also singing. The first monarchs that we would call faded ... possibly from Mexico.
