I had been gone for three days last week. I asked the students to check the tulip bed today, Monday, 3/13/00. Guess what? The tulips had emerged and were 3 to 5 cm high! We decided to put the emerged date as 3/11/00. This is eleven days earlier than 1999 and 2 days later than in the spring of 1998. I really thought we had a very hard winter this year, but it has been warming up and then cooling off. I thought this year we would be behind last year's date, but we were not. Soon we will be doing the growing degree days project and measuring the growth of our tulips.
