All Other Signs of Spring

Although we do not want to report a sighting, the information yesterday about swallows reminded us that a small town south of Cleveland called Hinkley, Ohio celebrates the return of the "buzzards" (turkey vultures) every year on March 15. Like the swallows, no one sees any buzzards until the 15th. Before that date large flying birds are identified as hawks or crows or something else. The town has a large celebration on the weekend after the 15th. There is a tradition that the buzzards first came after a large hunting expedition in the 1880's and that they return to Whipp's Ledges every year because of that event.
