Tulips EMERGED

Date: 03/09/2000

Number: 1

On March 7 it was very warm and muggy, totally out of character for this region! The next day was still unseasonably warm and rainy. On March 9th I was able to walk over to the bed because the ground had frozen overnight. I saw three of this year's tulips peeking out of the ground. They appeared to be frozen solid as snow flurries blew through the air. Since then 5 more tulips have emerged. (My first graders are thrilled.) This means, of course, that 22 of our tulips have not yet emerged. We talked about how we'll be able to draw comparisons between those that came up early and those that have not done so yet. The amazing thing to me is that the ones that I thought would surely have frozen off appear to be still growing. (This in spite of some temperatures in the teens.) As an aside, about three quarters of the established tulips from last year's experiment are already up. These are further along than the ones planted just this fall. We'll keep watching all of them!
