Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/13/2000

Number: 1

On Monday afternoon, March 13, we spotted a very faded Monarch trying to lay eggs on a totally stripped Asclepias bush. The Asclepias was stripped by the larvae of our overwintering monarch population. Houston did not have a significant freeze this winter, and the overwintering Monarchs have been occasionally laying eggs all winter long. Most recently, withing the last two weeks, there seems to have been a huge proliferation of caterpillars. Very few Asclepias on our campus or in our yards have any leaves left for the migrating butterflies from Mexico.
