Loon (FIRST sighted)

Date: 03/25/2000

Number: 1

I spotted a group of loons (I counted 10 - using binoculars) at the edge of the ice of Paudash Lake (about 15 kilometres from Bancroft). The ice is not yet fully out of the lake but there are larger areas opening up every day. We have lived on the lake for twenty five years and have never had this much open water this early in the year. We also have never seen loons this early in the year.

I wonder if this group of loons are migrating since the most that I have seen in our bay is two. The group of ten appeared to be with a group of mallard ducks. I have not yet heard any calling but I did spot one flying this morning.

With these weather conditions my next reporting could be for ice-out.
