Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/08/2000

Number: 1

Returned to our pasture Saturady in northwest DeWitt County and observed nine monarchs up close between 2 pm and 6 pm with fade from very little (~1) to very faded (4+). Two "getting right up in our faces" ... very faded (4+) with tatter and holes. The pasture has a great deal of Asclepias asperula, some A. oenotheroides, and a "mystery" milkweed ... hasn't bloomed yet for ID'ing. We located two more members of the Asclepiadaceae family in DeWitt county ... A. vertieillata (whorled milkweed) and Matelea reticulata (pearl milkvine). North wind, clear, 70 dF, sixth squall line in three weeks ... three with hail!
