Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/07/2000

Number: 1

How fitting it is to have seen the first monarch of the year during the Grand Opening Ceremonies outside the new North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. The Govenor Hunt and his special guests were seated outside, listening to the premier performance of "Cherish Your Land" (a hymn to the environment composed by Robert Ward) when a monarch flew overhead. Many of the Museum staff noticed it soaring. It had been a beautiful day in Raleigh, with highs in the 80s and a light breeze. Although unplanned, the monarch was a perfect addition to a fabulous opening.
