Not as terribly dramatic as the eastern US and Canada sightings, but I saw my first Monarch adult of the year today (April 10/00) on the eastern (valley) slopes of the Inner Coast Range of Central California. While in Del Puerto Canyon (east of Patterson), Stanislaus Co., CA today, I spotted two Monarch adults. One was working to the east down the canyon, close the the San Joaquin Valley, and the other seemed to be flying SW, perhaps seeking nectar. These undoubtedly came from hibernation sights along the Central California coast, such as those known from Santa Cruz to Monterey. Again, not terribly exciting but to keep you up with the western populations. Thanks for all of your work on the Monarchs and their migrations.
