Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/12/2000

Number: 1

Contributed by Monarch Watch

I was showing a visitor one of my bee yards on West Campus today at when we caught a glimpse of a large monarch as it flew over the car. It wasn't possible to tell sex and condition but I can say the monarch was a strong flyer and did not appear to have tattered wings. During warm springs monarchs are usually first seen in Lawrence between 14-20 April. The earliest arrival for 39 degrees N is 5 April. The earliest I've personally recorded monarchs in Lawrence is 7 April. In a few areas, particularly where the soil is warm, milkweeds are starting to make their appearance.
