Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 04/04/2000

Number: 1

What a thrill. Having migrated myself for spring vacation, from Mpls MN area to Cape Hatteras National Seashore on NC's Outer Banks, on April 4 I saw my first monarch of the season trying valiantly to keep from being blown out to sea. It had already been blown 15 miles out over Pamlico Sound, and appeared exhausted. It barely made it back over the dune against a 30 mph steady wind, heading west and north. Its wings and those of the other 8 monarchs spotted during the next 3 days were all fresh looking, except for 1 with tattered wings.
