One of the Students in my 4th grade classroom observed the Monarch at Cumberland Falls State Park. Because the state butterfly in Kentucky is the Viceroy Butterfly, last fall we studied how to determine the difference between a Viceroy and a Monarch. By carefully looking at the white spots on the butterfly's wings, Cody positively identified the butterfly as a monarch. We had also been keeping a sighting map in the classroom, and where he observed the butterfly was in line with the previous sighting data JN had provided the few weeks before. Thanks for providing such a VALUABLE learning experience for my classroom - Science core content is tested at the 4th grade level in the state of Kentucky, and Monarch migration and related activities fits into many of the concepts I need to teach my class. We have learned together so many things this year, and the students are anxiously awaiting for the symbolic Monarchs to arrive from Mexico.
