Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 04/23/2000

Number: 1

Monarch activity continues in northeast MS. Monarch wing conditions range from very faded to fresh. I have observed about 15 per hour during observations made the last few days. The common milkweed, swamp milkweed and butterfly weed all have eggs and more than half of the plants have larva. Our winter radish crop has produced small white flowers that the monarchs really go for. Yesterday I searched the fields for native milkweeds without any luck. I currently have about 40 milkweed plants.
The results are increased monarch activity. My future plans are
to plant more milkweed. Last year, I planted common milkweed seeds and nothing came up. This year what a suprise! they are already 4-6" tall. It brings back memories of the common milkweed observed in the summer months in the Upper Midwest.
