All Other Signs of Spring

Greetings from Woodbury, CT! On Easter morning, I walked the nearby trails at a Nature Center. It was in the mid forty degree range and drizzling (as it has for about a week!). The big event was hearing the drumming of a Ruffed Grouse. It sounds like a motor starting up. I also checked on the wildflowers in bloom. The Bloodroot has lost its petals, but Marsh Marigold, Virginia Bluebells, Fawn Lily and Spring Beauty are in bloom. The "umbrellas" of May Apple are opening, and Columbine is developing its showy, red blossoms. Smaller flowers - the Dwarf Ginseng and Goldenthread are just opening. The ferns are unrolling, including that peculiar Bracken Fern that comes out of the earth looking like a bird's claw! The floor of the woods is turning green from the many emerging leaves of Canada Mayflower. Incidentally, the Wood Frogs are in the tadpole stage in our vernal pools.
