Monarch Larva (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/04/2000

Number: 1

I was so excited that I wanted to send out birth announcements when I discovered 11 tiny monarch caterpillers on one of the milkweed plants in the Parkville Nature Sanctuary. They are the size of a pencil lead - so tiny! They have eaten holes the size of pencil erasers in the leaves. It is plant #10, the one in the chatted road bed. I was right, there were eggs on it seven days ago on 4/28. I have found no other eggs or larva on any of the other plants. The adult monarch chose the sturdiest of the plants for her egg laying. I look forward to monitoring the tiny critters through adulthood.
