A large female monarch (52-55mm) drifted down and landed about three feet from us about five this afternoon. She was not faded, we would guess a few days old. Wednesday we saw one monarch gliding across US87 east of Victoria. We saw two monarchs about 30 minutes later in the backyard. One was a "small" male the other larger ... didn't see it close up. Neither was very faded nor as large as today's female. Checked 40 leaves with holes and found 6 1st instars. If we saw what were probably the first migrating monarchs the last week of February and large numbers the first week of March, these could be two generations later.
