I was feeling envious of the other reporters of Monarch
sightings until yesterday (5/7/00) afternoon, when I spotted
a very faded visiting Asters at a local plant nursery. The
butterfly was not tattered at all, but had lost so many of its
scales that it was dark brown, like a Spicebush Swallowtail.
It wasn't until I snuck up and could see the cell pattern on
the wings that I could see it was clearly a Monarch. It was
very lively. Conditions: sunny and low 90's.
