Monarch Adult (FIRST sighted)

Date: 05/06/2000

Number: 1

I spotted my First Monarch at noon in my backyard. The temp was 90 degrees, very hot for CT at this time of the year. I have 2 large butterfly gardens but there was little for the monarch to nectar on. I had seen milkweed pips however and on Wed the 10th decided to check for eggs. I found 13 eggs on one common milkweed plant and 14 on 3 small esclepias tuberosa pips.I am now retired but as a grade one teacher I always supplied many teachers with eggs, so I gathered them up and took them to 2 schools(10 classes)+ 2 grandchildren. The children will release the butterflies during the last week of school! In Trumbull FOSS Science Insects Module is used in gr one so it is an exciting ending to their study of insects that began in Sept with the Monarch-tagging and all!
