On June 3, in Mamaroneck, NY. about 35 miles north of New York City, I spotted my first monarch of the season. She was laying eggs in a milkweed patch, near the highway, and there were already about 10 1st or 2nd instar caterpillars on the plants. This is several weeks earlier than I usually see monarchs here but the weather has been warm lately, so maybe they're on the move.
