Signs of Fall

Date: 08/05/2000

Number: 1

The first Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are being seen across Texas as far south as the coast. In a few weeks they will begin to stack up along the coast and staging to make the first attempts at migration across the Gulf of Mexico. Saturday morning we observed a total of ten Mississippi Kites near Houston soaring but remaining over the same spot. The first of the hawk watches starts at Smith Point (Trinity Bay at Galveston Bay). The hawkers there can sometimes tell us (mid-October) when the coastal monarch migration has begun and give us a day or two notice before the monarchs arrive here at the Lavaca Bay Causeway.
