Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/19/2000

Number: 1

We are already beginning to see several monarchs return to southwest Arkansas. We have had very little rail since the first of July and there are very few flowers for the butterflies to feed on except in local gardens. The monarchs we have been seeing are on a gravel road that runs north/south and is near the Red River. We caught some to check whether they were male or female - most were male. We did see one mating pair flying through the trees along the roadside. We also discovered some milkweed that we think is Sandvine Milkweed but have not found any larva there yet..
