For the past 25-30 years I've kept a small stand (4-6 plants) of milkweed growing in my garden, which is about 20'x10' and right on the street in front of an apartment building. I get every year from none to eighty caterpillars, from eggs laid on my plants and brought in at once (if I left them out, something snapped them up). This year I've had two so far. For years a stand of milkweed at the other end of the block also harbored Monarchs, but the owners of the building systematically destroyed the plants. No other milkweed in the neighborhood attract any butterflies at all. There is an underground stream under our street, which may have something to do with it.
