Signs of Fall

Date: 08/24/2000

Number: 1

Tues: A count of hawks/kites of 46 in 30 minutes over the campus ... 9:45 to 10:15 am ... two teachers and librarian joined my hawkwatch (it had been just me) ... 40 Mississippi Kites, 1 Swainson's Hawk, and 5 unident. buteos (high kettle). Some of the Miss. Kites might have been "chowing down" on dragonflies, over half were moving NNE to SSW. Hummers are showing in greater numbers along the Texas Gulf coast this week. In Port Lavaca we have had female Rufous and male/female Ruby-throated (1 mystery HB). Altus had one female RTHB get right in her face this pm. Queens (Danaus gilippus), but no monarchs (D. plexippus) yet.
