Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 08/28/2000

Number: 1

On 8/28/00, observed monarchs seemingly everywhere, perhaps 40 or 50, as we rode through a mixed tree belt (predominately ponderosa pine, easter red cedar, cottonwoods) that separates our house yard and horse lots from farm land (field of BT corn). Most observations made while riding horseback in early evening, between 6 and 7 p.m. DST. Riding path runs through middle of trees. Will repeat the horseback riding route tonight (9/5/00), to include both the tree belt and liatris patch, and report tomorrow morning. On 8/22/00 saw 4 or 5 monarchs in patch of rough gayfeather (liatris), of which they are particularly fond.
