Signs of Fall

Date: 09/06/2000

Number: 1

The hummingbirds continue to stack up along the central Texas coast with fantastic numbers. The few times we get to check the hummingbird bush at school we see one or two while we hurry home to Port Lavaca along Lavaca Bay to witness the mass migration. Almost all are Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, with an ocassional Black-chinned, Rufous, and Anna's and a rare Buff-bellied and Broad-tailed. Yesterday was the second day at 110+ dF and the hummers while resting were panting with their mouths open. At one feeder with no perches we counted 23 hummers at one time about seven last night in Port Lavaca ... three gallons of nectar in 20 feeders yesterday ... west wind, change possible by weekend.
