Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 08/27/2000

Number: 1

I went out to 2 huge fields of milkweed and the milkweed populations are the best I've seen in 5 years. The fields were loaded with still-green tall milkweed, indicative of alot of rain in our region throughout the entire summer. Maybe not many sunny days, but good steady rain and cooler than normal temperatures. I still found 8 larvae, despite the growing
darkness and short time I was out. I have seen monarch larvae from July 1st though the first week of September, so the monarchs are lavishing in lots of available green milkweed up
our way. It's when these migrants hit the lower East coast around the Carolinas and Georgia which had a severe drought may there be less available nectar flowers.
