Signs of Fall

On our beach vacation to Emerald Isle, NC I noticed swallows (or similar birds) flying west along the beach just behind the dunes. The island, Bogue Banks, runs east to west so the birds were following the contour of the coast. All birds were flying in a westerly direction without stopping. I estimate that the rate was 20-30 birds per minute. I watch for an hour and the flow continued after I stopped observing them. They were not flying in groups. It appeared that they were migrating but I was unaware of this type of bird doing so. Can you explain this siting? I would be very much interested in any information that you can provide.

Sincerely
