Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/08/2000

Number: 1

My class of second graders found on Tuesday afternoon, 4 Monarch
caterpillars on milkweed around our school and on Wednesday afternoon we found another one infront of the school. We are located within the borough but on the outskirts of it. The caterpillars were in various sizes. One died but I have a feeling a parasite had gotten to it. We have a large one still eating and 2 have gone into the Chrysalis stage. We are missing one of the living caterpillars - not sure what happened to it - it was small and could be in a curled up leaf. They were in our
classroom display window and yesterday afternoon I moved them to a large insect container. When they hatch, my class with observe them for a day or 2 and then we will release them. I have seen only a few Monarch butterflies this summer.
Of course, we were thrilled with our find. We are located in upper Northumberland County on the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania. Even though we are very close to the Central
