We definitely had a large number of monarchs descend just before the Sept. 11 storm in Mount Vernon, Iowa, and they were still festooning one of my favorite roost trees the next morning. I tagged 70 in about an hour, just picking them off with my fingers and placing them back on the pine needles because they still were dormant. Had to quit tagging and go off to work. There must have been at least 500 monarchs on the lower branches.
