Dr. Brent Ortego, TPWD Victoria, netted and tagged hummingbirds in our backyard again this morning (Friday). The count from daybreak to 10 am was 45 Ruby-throated HB and 1 Black-chinned HB captured, examined, tagged, and released. The total for Sunday and today is 125 RTHB, 1 BCHB, and 1 Rufous HB. There were no recaptures from the Sunday tagging. The annual southbound migration of hummingbirds is a "big deal" in Texas and 50 miles SW down the coast from Port Lavaca is the internationally renowned "Hummingbird Festival" at Rockport this weekend. Two hummers at 5 pm in the VCS butterfly garden when we left for home.
