Signs of Fall

Date: 09/18/2000

Number: 1

After a few days with the wind out of the north the numbers of hummingbirds had dropped down to about a dozen at a time. By this afternoon the wind had gone from north to southeast and there was a fallout after five pm. At seven this evening the number was about forty-five at the fourteen feeders we could see out the back door ... another eighteen at feeders across the yard ... we guess for every one we can see there is another up in the trees or on the overhead wires ... chatter and squeaks everywhere. These (mostly Ruby-throated) will continue to stack up along the coast, fatten, and then start across the Gulf to the Yucatan.
