We saw two manatees swimming close to shore -- in about four feet of water -- at Venice Beach, about an hour south of Tampa, where we live. We thought it was unusual to see the manatees in the Gulf of Mexico, since they're primarily fresh water animals. They were beautiful, though, rolling in the water and nuzzling one another as they swam south along the coastline.
