Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/27/2000

Number: 1

Thursday - 9/27/00 - 7:30a.m. When our 600+ elementary
students gathered this morning for the Reagan Magnet News
Update, much excitement spilled out of the doors as a single
monarch butterfly was sighted inside our gymnasium. She
appeared to be warming and exercising her wings as she
hung from the protective grill over a ceiling light. In order to
help this creature get on the migration trail to Mexico City, I
asked for scholarly behavior, a ladder, a net, the aid of our
janitors and a volunteer to climb the ladder. We were able to
capture her around 9:30 a.m. and my kindergarten students
were quick to check for two black dots in order to identify
male or female. Zero dots indicated she was a female. After
placing her into a temporary cage, we watched her with great
interest for about 30 minutes. As we released her outside of
our building, the southeast wind was causing our flags to
make a fluttering noise. She flew to a small tree near us to
rest for a few min
