Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 09/27/2000

Number: 1

I went to the ocean beach around 1 PM to do some painting. I was there until 5:45PM. The whole afternoon there was a leisurely procession of Monarches fighting a stiff westerly wind.
At least it looked leisurely to me. It was probably very hard work for them. At any given time there were 15-20 in sight but none were bunched up. This is first time I have seen them this year but unfortunately my trips to the beach have been limited. Last year's peak was 9/18/99 when I saw thousands in the dunes and on the beach at any given time for several hours. I guess I missed it this year unless it will be later by more than a week.
