Monarch (OTHER Observations)

Date: 09/27/2000

Number: 1

My first graders and I have had a most incredibly exciting experience over the last two weeks. We gathered a few monarch caterpillars from the milkweed plants in our class butterfly garden and kept them in the classroom to observe. We have been able to watch them change from larva to pupae to butterfly right before our eyes. We have done daily journal entries with illustrations to show the different stages but the most exciting part was yesterday when we released them and they soared up toward the sky on their way to Mexico! The children stood there calling after them and watching until they were out of sight. The day before we had just mailed off our symbolic butterflies so they too were on their way.Thank you for this wonderful opportunity for stretching the minds of little children (and their teacher)!Carolyn Mahar
