Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/04/2000

Number: 1

For the past two days 10-3-00 and 10-4-00, 300 to 400 monarchs have been roosting in the drainage ditch 1/2 block from my school. Our temps have been in the 80s and 90s during the sightings and the wind is from the south at 17 mph. Since the drainage ditch offers shelter from the wind, I assume this is just a stop over until the direction of the wind changes to a north wind. The monarchs are roosting on low branches hanging near the bottom and on the concrete wall near the opening under the street. I have had monarchs nectaring in our wildscape on the native lantana everyday from 8:00am to 5:00pm this week. Last year we had very few monarchs during the fall migration. It has been a glorious sight! Hope my digital pictures come out!!!!
