Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/05/2000

Number: 1

We are still seeing the Monarchs in their southward migration. This morning I saw about 10 Monarchs go through my yard in about 10 minutes of time. There are still Monarchs feeding in my yard. I seen Monarch wings from dead Monarchs near the flowers where they were feeding. I'd never seen that before. I just found a preying mantis (sp?) hanging off a Zinnia flower with a Monarch butterfly in its mouth and it has eaten most of the body. I did not know they ate butterflies. I have always encouraged their presence. If anyone reads this and knows - Is this normal?? We are in a region where there has been one of the worst droughts ever. Our wind this morning was coming from the south and was still warm and now at 1:25 pm the wind is switching and is supposed to be cold by tonight. I have seen more Monarchs flying higher than I've seen this week.
