Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/11/2000

Number: 1

(Also see report for 10/29/00.)
Today, 10/11/00 we drove thru thousands of monarchs between Gulf Shores Alabama, and Perdido Key, Florida, which is about a twenty mile ride. The road is approximately 1/8 of a mile from the Gulf of Mexico and runs parallel the entire distance. The bad news is, we hit and killed at least 5 along the way. There were hundreds of other cars that did the same. The good news is, the dunes are full of milkweed and they are laying eggs with great gusto.
The strong winds last week, from the north, delivered them to the Gulf Coast. They must have arrived at night because we didn't see a single monarch during the day and we live about 2 miles inland from the Gulf.
