As it turned out, the monarchs themselves hinted at their intentions by appearing in abundance on dirt roads and in fields. I suspected that the move was on, and time soon showed that to be the case. The last of these endearing insects appeared to have moved through around September 18-19. I did not observe them beyond these dates, which were followed by rain and cooler weather.
The last monarchs that I observed were in excellent condition and appeared to be very active. I can't say that I specifically saw any of them feeding, although the main flora still in bloom was the aster (the New York aster, specifically, was the dominant species).
