Monarch PEAK Migration

Date: 10/14/2000

Number: 1

The annual Monarch southern migration through the Pensacola FL area is here. We sighted about 100 Monarchs over Pensacola Bay from the Garcon Point bridge. October is also the month in which Monarchs are seen in large numbers at Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island, and this year is no exception. In our backyard butterfly garden in Gulf Breeze, Monarch caterpillars continue to eat our milkweed, pupate, and hatch - we've had about 10 hatchlings in the past 2 weeks - but this year has seen fewer than previous years. We speculate this may be due to the drought.
