The first flurry of migrating monarchs appeared along the Texas mid-coast at the north end of the Lavaca Bay Causeway today. We got there at five and very quickly had netted, measured, tagged, and released three that were nectaring on goldenrod. In about 40 minutes of observing, we sighted 16 monarchs on goldenrods. We did not look up or farther out over the water as the ones within fifty feet of the shell road on the peninsula held our attention. Three males (53, 54, and 53 mm front wings), two females (54 mm and 53 mm), some fading (2 to 2.5), with very "plump bellies" and yellow "feet" from the goldenrod pollen. Saw three more between Victoria and Port Lavaca.
